'Killing Eve'...Our Latest Obsession
Team Hackenbacker are so proud to have been a part of the smash hit series ‘Killing Eve’, which has recently completed a record-breaking run on BBC America, to much critical and viewer acclaim.
The sound for the show was edited and mixed in our Bateman Street Soho HQ. Foley was recorded at our dedicated stage in Marylebone .
Produced by Colin Wratten and based on the ‘Codename Villanelle’ novels by Luke Jennings, this highly original series was written and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and executive producers Sally Woodward-Gentle and Lee Morris for London based Sid Gentle Films.
The story follows Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), a desk-bound MI5 officer as she attempts to track down a sociopathic assassin, Villanelle (Jodie Comer), during which, both women become totally obsessed with each other, leading to some real ‘pressure-cooker’ situations!
Hackenbacker created a dynamic and unique soundtrack for the series complimenting the action and racking up the tension.
Nigel Heath, Hackenbacker’s founder who acted as Re-Recording mixer on the show comments, “Killing Eve was simply a joy to work on. Our sound team brought so much good stuff to the table giving us a wealth of sonic riches to exploit in the mix sessions. We first mixed in 5.1 and then did a dedicated stereo pass to ensure that the thrill and impact of the 5.1 mix was reflected as much as possible in the stereo version. We paid particular attention to dialogue clarity, especially when the mix would be heard under non-ideal listening conditions. It was great to welcome back returning producer Colin Wratten, and, with directors, Harry Bradbeer, Jon East and Damon Thomas all giving us such amazing material to work with, and with David Holmes superbly realised score, the entire series was really exciting and highly rewarding to work on - I loved every second. Like all of the team here, I’m so thrilled to see the US audience reaction and to learn that it was re-commissioned for a second series before the first series had even aired”
Producer Colin Wratten comments “I have been bringing projects to Nigel Heath at Hackenbacker for ten years, and for good reason. I am so proud of the team at Hackenbacker. They always prep the pre-mix to such a high standard. They deliver so many creative surprises it means the directors and I have such fun in the final mix. It’s enormously rewarding and there’s always a great vibe in the studio. Creative challenges on this project included a distinct soundscape for each of the six European countries we visited. It was essential we balanced the high-energy tension of the piece with clarity of dialogue on multiple platforms plus allowing David Holmes’ joyous score to soar. There was also ‘the scene’ in Episode 5 where Nigel suggested we drained sound from the mix to create a unique atmosphere between Villanelle & Eve when they meet for the first time”.
‘Killing Eve’ will premiere in the UK on BBC1 later in 2018, with BBC3 making the series available as a box set on BBCiPlayer.
